Various switching principles are used in energy distribution. Older switching methods using air or oil insulation have been largely replaced by modern units operating under SF6 gas or vacuum. Contacts made from WCAg(Co) composite materials, specially suited to high switching cycles (> 1 000 000), are used for protective vacuum circuit breakers.
